This image was used in the March 2007 issued of JEMS magazine’s “Call to Action” section. Pictured is Sabra Havey, RNC and Mark Jones, EMT-P both with St. Louis Children’s Hospital MICU transport unit while preparing an isolet for a neonatal transfer. The level one trauma center operates three MICUs and works in conjunction with ARCH aeromedical transport. St. Louis Children’s Hospital was recently ranked one of the 10 best pediatric hospitals in the United States.
I quickly tossed a blue-gelled SB-800 speedlight in the corner of the ambulance to get the blue effect that you see along the back right wall. I bounced another SB-800 off the ceiling to light the crew. Shot using a Nikon D200 with a Nikkor 12-24 ED lens.

Teacher Collapse - AED Save

St. Charles County Ambulance District (Mo) paramedics along with fire/rescue personnel from the Wentzville Fire Protection District (Mo) work to stabilize a high school teacher who collapsed and went into cardiac arrest while sitting in the teacher’s lounge of a local high school. Acting quickly, the school nurse started CPR while a co-worker attached an AED and administered a shock. The patient soon started breathing on his own and shortly after this image was taken he was talking to paramedics and co-workers. He was then transported to a hospital with cardiac-cath lab facilities.

Paramedic Russ Allen (left) is seen pushing meds while coordinating times with paramedic Kimberlyn Tihen (standing). Kneeling next to the patient on the right is the school nurse that started CPR.
This image was taken in available light with no flash. I would have usually used a flash to help pull out the colors from the florescent lightning which is terrible light to work with even with white balance adjustments, but due to the nature of to the call, I was afraid the flash would cause anxiety from the on looking co-workers. The fluorescent lighting causes what I refer to as muddy colors and tone so I decided to convert the image to black and white from the original color version. I do think the B/W version heightens the drama of the scene and solves my fluorescent lighting problem.

Spectators of a Jeep Safari event in Moab, Utah are ushered into service to assist rescuers in evacuating a young man who jumped into the stream from an abandoned powerhouse dam. Suffering fractures and internal injuries, the patient was immobilized in the stream whereby rescuers were faced with the task of moving the patient down the stream to a point where he could be lifted up the steep embankments.
